What do safety net supports like Medicaid/SNAP/ACA mean for you/your family?Transcript
I have something called Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, which affects all the connective tissue in my body. It also makes me have extra blood clots. For instance, I just turned 40 back in January, but I had a heart attack when I was 33. I didn't have Medicaid yet back then, so I had to go into a ton of medical debt. But I've had medical emergencies repeatedly. And during one, I finally was able to get through to getting fast-tracked to Medicaid. And so, considering I go to the hospital without really wanting to a couple times a year, but I also go several times for regular procedures for esophageal varices, because I actually even have a blood clot blocking my liver as well. So because of Medicaid, it allows me to stay healthy enough that I can do what I consider sort of my job, which is being the caretaker for my mom. So you know, taxpayers are worried about wasting money on Medicaid. But if I wasn't here, my mom wouldn't be getting taken care of. She'd actually be in some sort of home that would be much, much more expensive for the taxpayers than what I do, which is essentially, you know, I'm glad to have Medicaid. Because it allows me not only to be alive, but again, to do that for her. Actually in a way, if you're looking to make government more efficient and stuff, I'm saving taxpayers bucks by being our caretaker. SNAP also allows me to be able to, you know, have enough money for us to have meals and stuff like that. You know, without these things, I don't want to exaggerate, but it is not exaggerating to say that if they make cuts to Medicaid, that my life will be shortened significantly. When my life is shortened significantly, my mom's life, she's 76 years old, she's had leukemia for 16 years, she went through chemotherapy in 2016. I've been her caretaker for years. If I die, she dies. That's my story.
